he ABS was formed in 1979. The ABS issues a bimonthly Magazine and the Journal to disseminate information about the use, care, propagation and beauty of bamboo .Bamboo is both decorative and useful. In many parts of the world it is food, fodder, the primary construction material and is used for making great variety of useful objects from kitchen tools, to paper to dinnerware.

In the past four or five years, ORE has been pushing a program to introduce and mass-propagate high quality bamboo cultivars suitable for building and handicrafts... Improved varieties such as Guadua angustofolia produce culms 6 inches in diameter and 100 feet long. In Colombia they are used for house construction and are considered as durable as hard woods.
